The primary purpose of classroom assessment is to provide information about student learning. Classroom assessment should:

• Be integrated within curriculum and instruction.
  
  
• Provide information on individual student progress to students and teachers in order to improve teaching.
  
  
• Provide information on aggregate student progress to teachers, administrators, parents and community members.
  
  
• Accommodate a variety of student thinking and learning interests and abilities.
  
  
• Make flexible use of a variety of assessment types such as performance tasks, projects, exhibitions, teacher observations and portfolios.
  
  
• Be ongoing, providing illustrations of a student's present status, progress and future needs.
