What to Look For in a Quality Science
& Mathematics Assessment Program
The primary purpose of classroom assessment is to provide information
about student learning. Classroom assessment should:
- Be integrated within curriculum and instruction.
- Provide information on individual student progress to students and teachers in
order to improve teaching.
- Provide information on aggregate student progress to teachers, administrators,
parents and community members.
- Accommodate a variety of student thinking and learning interests and abilities.
- Make flexible use of a variety of assessment types such as performance tasks,
projects, exhibitions, teacher observations and portfolios.
- Be ongoing, providing illustrations of a student's present status, progress and
future needs.
